Québec-based deeptech startup SBQuantum successfully launched a quantum diamond magnetometer into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This mission is part of the MagQuest Challenge, led by the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, aimed at improving the accuracy of the World Magnetic Model (WMM). The WMM is critical for global navigation systems used in smartphones, aviation, and military operations, but current data sources are aging and insufficient given the rapid shift of Earth's magnetic North Pole. SBQuantum’s sensor provides continuous, high-resolution monitoring of magnetic fields, offering a robust alternative to GPS, which is vulnerable to jamming, spoofing, and signal loss in extreme latitudes. In partnership with Spire Global, the company aims to validate magnetic navigation as a strategic capability for defense and aerospace sectors. This technology leverages nitrogen vacancy diamonds to measure magnetic properties without precise positioning, addressing key vulnerabilities in electronic warfare environments. The initiative aligns with Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy, which identifies quantum sensing as a key sovereign capability.
