Save the Children: Three Babies Born Every Minute in Sudan War

As the conflict in Sudan enters its third year, international charity Save the Children warns that at least three babies are born every minute into dire conditions. Since the war began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), approximately 5.6 million births have occurred, with 5,000 children born daily amidst widespread violence and collapsing health services. The organization highlights that mothers and newborns face severe risks due to overcrowded shelters, damaged facilities, and critical shortages of medical supplies. Maternal mortality rates have risen by over 12 percent since 2022, while up to 80 percent of health facilities in conflict zones are nonoperational. The World Health Organization has verified around 200 attacks on healthcare infrastructure, resulting in thousands of deaths. With millions displaced and facing hunger, the UN describes the situation as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Save the Children urges all conflicting parties to protect civilians and ensure access to essential care for vulnerable families surviving in catastrophic conditions.
