Salt Pan Workers in Thoothukudi Protest Lack of Basic Amenities

Salt pan workers in the Thoothukudi Assembly Constituency, widely known as the Pearl City, have expressed significant indignation regarding the persistent lack of adequate amenities in their working and living environments. Despite the constituency witnessing notable upgrades in civic infrastructure in recent years, including improvements to drinking water supplies, the establishment of a multi-speciality hospital, and the construction of storm water drains, these specific laborers feel excluded from such developmental benefits. The Thoothukudi constituency is characterized by a diverse economic landscape comprising the V.O. Chidambaranar Port, fishing harbors, salt pans, various industries, and power plants. Politically, the area has seen a consistent alternation of power between the DMK and AIADMK parties since 1967.
