SAIC and Changan Launch New EVs to Rival Tesla Model Y
Chinese automakers are intensifying competition with Tesla in the domestic electric vehicle market by launching new models directly targeting the Model Y. On September 26, 2024, Changan’s premium brand Avatr unveiled the Avatr 07, a mid-size SUV available in both pure electric and extended-range hybrid variants. Priced between RMB 219,900 and RMB 289,900, it features Huawei’s Advanced Driving System and HarmonyOS. Simultaneously, SAIC’s IM Motors introduced a refreshed LS6 crossover, priced from RMB 216,900 to RMB 279,900. The LS6 boasts a steer-by-wire system and advanced driver assistance capabilities similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software, along with an improved driving range of up to 750 km for top-tier models. These launches are part of a broader trend where five major Chinese manufacturers, including Geely, NIO, and Luxeed, have recently released competing SUVs. The strategic move aims to capture market share amidst slowing demand for pure EVs by offering competitive pricing, enhanced technology, and hybrid options to appeal to a wider consumer base.
