Rust Project Joins Outreachy May 2026 Cohort with Four Interns
The Rust Project has announced its participation in the May 2026 cohort of Outreachy, an open-source internship program designed for individuals facing underrepresentation or systemic bias in the tech industry. This marks a continuation of Rust's engagement with mentorship initiatives, following its involvement in Google Summer of Code and OSPP. Unlike GSoC, where Google funds stipends, Outreachy requires participating communities to cover intern costs. Due to funding and mentoring capacity constraints, the Rust Project selected four interns for this cycle. The selected projects include implementing experimental support for calling overloaded C++ functions from Rust, developing workflows for large-scale code coverage analysis of the Rust compiler, and fuzzing the a-mir-formality type system implementation. Each intern is paired with experienced mentors from the Rust community to guide their contributions. This initiative aims to enhance diversity within the Rust ecosystem while advancing critical technical infrastructure and tooling for the language.
