Residents Demand Speed-Breaker at Balaji Nagar Junction After Accidents

Residents and social activists in Balaji Nagar, near Mayiladuthurai, have urgently requested the Highways Department to install a speed-breaker at the junction on the Mayiladuthurai-Poompuhar-Manakkudi road. This appeal follows a series of recent accidents in the area, which have resulted in loss of life and heightened safety concerns among the local community. The road, which connects Mayiladuthurai town with the new bus terminus at Manakkudi, has experienced a significant increase in traffic volume in recent months. Locals attribute the rising accident rate to high-speed vehicles and heavy traffic flow, particularly from the Mayiladuthurai-Sirkazhi road through Kooturavu Nagar. Social activist A. Apparasundaram highlighted that the absence of speed-control measures between Manakkudi and Caltax road has led to multiple incidents over the past month. Resident R. Sathya emphasized that motorists frequently fail to slow down despite dense pedestrian and vehicle movement. In response, official sources from the Highways Department stated that the request would be examined, with appropriate action to be determined based on feasibility studies and traffic assessments.
