Residents Demand Bypass for Periyapalayam Amid Severe Traffic Congestion

Residents of Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district are urging the construction of a bypass road to alleviate severe traffic congestion. The current route, which passes through the town and the Sri Bhavani Amman temple, experiences significant bottlenecks, with jams lasting up to four hours and stretching one to two kilometers. Local residents attribute the worsening situation to an exponential increase in vehicle volume on the Janapachathram to Uthukottai road, serving commuters heading to various destinations in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, including the new Chittoor access road. Social activists highlight that encroachments, particularly permanent buildings rather than small vendors, remain unaddressed, exacerbating the issue. Although a bypass was announced previously, its construction has been delayed. Highways Department sources confirmed that a proposal for the bypass is currently under consideration but was put on hold pending the completion of another road project by the National Highways Authority of India. The community emphasizes the urgent need for infrastructure development to prevent motorists from missing important occasions and to improve connectivity between Avadi, Tiruvallur, and Siruvapuri.
