Remand Prisoner Escapes Police Custody in Karaikudi

An 18-year-old remand prisoner escaped from police custody in Karaikudi, Sivaganga district, on Monday. The suspect, hailing from Othakadai in Madurai, had been arrested by Sakkottai police in connection with a series of car battery thefts reported in the Sakkottai area. During the investigation, authorities seized 11 vehicle batteries from his possession. On Sunday, while being transported by police from Madurai to Sakkottai, the vehicle stopped near a railway gate on Kudikathanpatti Road in Karaikudi. The suspect requested permission to relieve himself, and upon being allowed to exit the vehicle, he pushed the attending officers aside and fled the scene. Following the incident, Constable Sivabalan filed a formal complaint regarding the escape. In response, the Karaikudi South Police have registered a case against the fugitive and launched an active search operation to locate and apprehend him. This incident highlights security lapses during prisoner transport and has prompted immediate law enforcement action in the region.
