Railway Officials Meet SRMU to Address Loco Drivers' Demands Amid Mass Leave Protest

Senior railway officials from the Chennai division of Southern Railway held a crucial meeting with representatives of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) to address various grievances raised by loco running staff. This dialogue was initiated after more than 1,000 loco staff members affiliated with the union submitted mass leave applications to protest the perceived neglect of their demands. Key issues discussed included the slow progress in recruiting new loco drivers, which has reportedly caused operational hardships in shunting, electrical multiple unit (EMU) train operations, and long-distance services. The union also highlighted excessive working hours for goods loco drivers, who are often required to work nearly 12 hours against a mandated nine-hour shift. Additional demands included providing night rest for drivers on continuous night duties, installing air-conditioned cabins, and sanctioning pending leaves. The SRMU further urged the immediate publication of the loco pilot selection list and the processing of pending promotions and depot transfers. A senior Southern Railway official acknowledged the memorandum, stating that the union's demands have been noted and assurances were given that the issues would be resolved promptly.
