RAI Institute Launches Public Robotics Pop-Up in Cambridge Mall
In summer 2025, the RAI Institute established a free pop-up robotics experience at the CambridgeSide mall to bridge the gap between public perception and reality regarding robotic technology. Recognizing that most opinions are shaped by sensationalized media rather than direct interaction, the initiative aimed to provide hands-on exposure to state-of-the-art robotics. The exhibit featured two main components: a museum area displaying historical and modern prototypes, including the UMV and ANYmal, and an interactive "Drive-a-Spot" arena. In this interactive section, visitors controlled a Spot quadruped robot using a custom-built adaptive controller designed for accessibility across all ages, from toddlers to seniors. This setup allowed participants to perform basic maneuvers such as moving, sitting, and adjusting height. The project's dual goals were to democratize access to advanced robotics and to gather insights into how the general public perceives and interacts with these machines in everyday environments. By facilitating direct engagement, the RAI Institute sought to understand the social dynamics of human-robot integration beyond theoretical hardware and software challenges.
