Pune Metro to Launch Dedicated Feeder Bus Service for Last-Mile Connectivity
The Pune Metro is planning to introduce a dedicated feeder bus network to address underwhelming ridership and improve last-mile connectivity for passengers. Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro), announced that proposals are being sought from interested companies to operate these services. The initiative aims to increase commuter footfall by ensuring buses are available every 5 to 10 minutes within 25 meters of passengers' origins and destinations. Currently, the metro collaborates with Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) for feeder services, but the new plan involves Pune Metro running its own buses on routes not covered by PMPML after rationalization. A detailed project report and origin-destination survey will determine the vehicle type, such as mini or eight-seater buses, starting with a pilot project at one or two stations. Presently, feeder services operate at 11 stations using 85 PMPML buses, including branded metro feeders, e-buses, and e-scooters. The move is expected to boost daily ridership from the current 1.88 lakh, particularly with the upcoming operationalization of Line 3.
