Protest Against Odampoki River Road Project Withdrawn in Tiruvarur

The Odampoki Irrigation River Protection Committee has officially withdrawn its planned protest demonstration scheduled for May 12 in Tiruvarur. The protest was initially organized to oppose the impingement of the Odampoki river bank for a road development project. The decision follows a peace committee meeting held on May 8 at the Tahsildar Office, where committee representatives, including members from Makkal Adhikaram and other local groups, discussed concerns with officials from the Highways and Water Resources Departments. Government officials assured the committee that the road expansion serves public interest, clarified that retaining walls do not encroach on the river, and promised the construction of culverts to maintain water flow to irrigation channels. Despite this resolution, local social and environmental activists remain dissenting. Speaking anonymously, they criticized the government's handling of the issue, warning that widening carriageways and covering drain channels with concrete could severely impact natural flood drainage and groundwater availability in Tiruvarur. Furthermore, activists highlighted that the necessity of an environmental impact assessment remains unaddressed, suggesting underlying tensions regarding the project's ecological consequences persist despite the withdrawal of the immediate protest.
