ProPublica and Texas Tribune Launch Second Year of Investigative Initiative
ProPublica and The Texas Tribune have announced the launch of the second year of their collaborative Texas Investigative Initiative, selecting five new partner newsrooms to enhance accountability journalism across the state. The participating organizations include the Big Bend Sentinel, Houston Chronicle, KRIS 6 News, KXAN Investigates, and the Texas Observer. Over the coming year, these partners will collaborate with the ProPublica-Tribune investigative unit to report on state and federal efforts to restrict local control. This initiative builds on the success of its first year, which produced significant investigations into Dallas city government reforms, the political influence of Mercy Culture church, lobbying groups, and Elon Musk’s impact on Texas legislation. Vianna Davila, deputy editor of the joint unit, emphasized the critical role of local newsrooms in holding powerful officials accountable. Established in 2020, this unique collaboration allows both parent organizations to publish findings, which are then distributed freely to other outlets. The program aims to act as a force multiplier for investigative reporting, addressing complex issues ranging from border wall construction in the Big Bend region to utility reforms and flood management in Houston.
