Progress on CBG Plant Establishment at Njeliyanparamba Waste Site

Significant progress is being made in the scientific biomining operations aimed at clearing the century-old legacy waste mound at Njeliyanparamba in Kozhikode, Kerala. This long-standing environmental hazard for local residents is being addressed through the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP). Officials state that once the waste clearance and land reclamation processes are completed, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) will construct a compressed biogas (CBG) plant on the reclaimed site. The project involves handing over seven acres of land to BPCL for this purpose. The first phase of land transfer, covering three acres, is scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2026. This initiative represents a dual benefit of resolving a critical environmental issue while promoting renewable energy infrastructure. The biomining efforts are currently underway, marking a pivotal step toward transforming the dumping yard into a productive energy facility. The collaboration between state waste management authorities and a major public sector undertaking highlights a strategic approach to sustainable urban development and waste-to-energy conversion in the region.
