Khanavdi, the native village of social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule in Pune, has inaugurated the Jyoti-Savitri Zilla Parishad School, marking a significant shift from traditional memorials to modern education. Initially approached to renovate Phule’s memorial, villagers and architect Rishikesh Huli proposed building a high-quality English-medium school instead. Supported by 12 acres of community land and Rs 36 crore in combined funding from Fiat India’s CSR initiative and the Pune Zilla Parishad, the project aims to provide world-class infrastructure to rural families. The non-profit Christel House India manages the institution, which features advanced facilities like robotics labs and 3D printers. This initiative addresses the educational disparity between rural and urban areas, allowing underprivileged children access to CBSE curriculum without high fees. The school’s opening has already reversed migration trends, with parents moving back from Pune to enroll their children. By offering superior education locally, the project highlights the shortcomings of existing rural schools and empowers the community through accessible, high-standard learning opportunities, fulfilling Phule’s legacy of social empowerment through education.
