Peru’s Congress Impeaches Interim President José Jerí Over Secret Chinese Meetings
Peru’s Congress has impeached interim President José Jerí, removing him from office after just four months in power. The impeachment, passed with 75 votes in favor, cites allegations that Jerí held secret meetings with Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang, who subsequently received state concessions for energy projects. Although Jerí admitted to the meetings, he denied any irregular conduct or influence peddling. This removal marks the third consecutive presidential ouster in Peru, highlighting the nation's severe political instability since 2016, which has seen eight different leaders. Following Jerí's removal, Congress has scheduled new general elections for April 12, 2026. In the interim, a new leader will be elected by Congress from a list of candidates including Segundo Héctor Acuña Peralta and María del Carmen Alva Prieto. Jerí had originally assumed the presidency in October 2025 after his predecessor, Dina Boluarte, was impeached for moral incapacity. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating the matter, having collected security footage as evidence.
