Over 5 Tonnes of Banned Tobacco Products Destroyed in Cuddalore

Authorities in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India, successfully destroyed more than five tonnes of banned tobacco products on May 10, 2026. This significant enforcement action was carried out following a specific court order to dispose of contraband seized in various legal cases. According to police reports, a total of 5,714.5 kg of prohibited items, primarily consisting of gutkha and other smokeless tobacco products, were collected from 23 different cases registered at multiple police stations across the district. The destruction process was conducted under the strict supervision of Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar to ensure compliance with legal standards. Officials from the Food Safety Department, the municipal sanitation wing, and local police personnel were present to witness the safe burial and disposal of the materials. These products had been previously banned by the State government due to health concerns. The operation highlights ongoing efforts by local law enforcement and regulatory bodies to curb the illegal trade and consumption of harmful tobacco substances in the region, reinforcing public health mandates through decisive administrative and judicial actions.
