Report: Over 400 Tamil Nadu Candidates Face Serious Criminal Charges

A recent report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Tamil Nadu Election Watch (TNEW) reveals that at least 404 candidates contesting in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections have declared serious criminal cases against them. Additionally, 722 candidates have pending criminal cases overall. The report defines serious offenses as those carrying a maximum punishment of five years or more, including non-bailable crimes, electoral offenses, and crimes against women. Among major political parties, the AIADMK had the highest number of candidates with serious charges (60 out of 170 analyzed), followed by TVK and DMK. Jayaram Venkatesan, State Coordinator of Arappor Iyakkam, criticized political parties for ignoring Supreme Court directives and continuing to field candidates with criminal backgrounds, noting that approximately 18% of candidates have such records. The report aims to inform voters ahead of the elections, highlighting a persistent issue in regional politics despite judicial guidelines intended to clean up electoral processes. The findings underscore significant concerns regarding candidate integrity and the influence of criminal elements in the democratic process within Tamil Nadu.
