The New South Wales government has announced a $4.5 million investment to complete missing links in a continuous 91-kilometre walking and cycling path connecting the Sydney Opera House to Parramatta Park. This initiative aims to enhance Sydney’s infrastructure by linking 18 suburbs along Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River, celebrating the city's geography and exercise culture. Transport Minister John Graham highlighted that while 68 kilometres of the route are currently accessible, approximately 23 kilometres require further planning and construction. The funding will support immediate upgrades in the inner west, including new shared paths, lighting, and raised crossings in Chiswick and Concord, as well as improvements near the popular Bay Run loop. Additionally, construction on the Bennelong Parkway Bridge is scheduled to begin mid-year. This project builds upon the 2017 Sydney green grid plan and previous proposals from the McKell Institute, addressing growing demand for safe pedestrian access. The government acknowledges that fully realizing this vision will require significant long-term investment and collaboration with local councils to overcome challenges such as disconnected routes and unsafe crossings.
