NIO Unveils Firefly EV to Challenge Mini and Smart in Global Market
NIO CEO William Li announced the upcoming launch of Firefly, the company’s first small electric vehicle, designed to compete with rivals like the Mini Cooper and Mercedes-Benz’s Smart. Scheduled to debut at NIO Day, the vehicle will feature an advanced intelligent driving system and enhanced safety standards, aiming for five-star Euro NCAP ratings. Sales are set to begin next year in China and overseas markets, including Europe, with monthly delivery targets of several thousand units. The Firefly brand will operate with an independent battery-swapping network using smaller batteries but will share sales and service infrastructure with the main NIO brand. Priced between RMB 140,000 and RMB 200,000, the model is pivotal to NIO’s global expansion and its goal to break even by 2026. While maintaining a pure BEV strategy in China, NIO remains open to hybrid options for international markets due to varying charging infrastructure levels. This launch complements the mainstream Onvo brand, which aims to drive significant sales growth, supporting NIO’s target of doubling total sales to approximately 440,000 units next year.
