Mukarba Chowk Underpass 98% Complete, Set to Open Soon
The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has announced that the construction of the Mukarba Chowk underpass in North Delhi is 98% complete and will be opened for traffic within a few days. PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh confirmed during an inspection that only final touches remain on the project, which began in 2022. The infrastructure initiative utilizes jack pushing technology to construct three separate tunnels designated for two-wheelers, pedestrians, and four-wheelers. Aimed at alleviating severe congestion at the busy Outer Ring Road intersection, the underpass will provide direct connectivity between Badli/Rohini and Azadpur/Jahangirpuri. Officials estimate the corridor will serve approximately 15,800 vehicles daily, reducing travel time by up to 10 minutes and distance by 1 kilometer per trip. Additionally, the project is expected to save 58,000 liters of fuel annually and cut CO2 emissions by 135 tonnes. Enhanced pedestrian safety is a key feature, addressing previous accident risks due to inadequate crossing facilities. Concurrently, desilting work on supplementary drains is being conducted to prevent waterlogging during monsoons, ensuring the underpass remains functional year-round.
