MMHRC Surgeons Relieve Chronic Back Pain in 60-Year-Old Woman via Complex Spinal Procedure

Surgeons at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) in Madurai successfully treated a 60-year-old woman suffering from severe lower back pain caused by a large pseudomeningocele. This abnormal sac, filled with cerebrospinal fluid, was identified as a complication from a spine surgery performed five years prior. Due to the patient's advanced disc degeneration at the L4–L5 and L5–S1 levels, the medical team executed a multi-faceted surgical approach. The procedure involved removing the pseudomeningocele, stabilizing the spine through vertebral fusion, and performing duraplasty to repair tears in the spinal covering to prevent future fluid leakage. Additionally, surgeons utilized a Limberg flap technique, repositioning healthy skin and tissue to cover the significant defect created by long-standing swelling.
