Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Completes In-Orbit AI Ship Detection Trial
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has successfully completed an in-orbit demonstration of its AIRIS system, an AI-based object detection technology designed to identify ships from satellite imagery. The trial utilized a next-generation space-grade microprocessor unit, the SOISOC4, which was jointly developed with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Launched aboard JAXA’s RAISE-4 small demonstration satellite in December 2025 as part of the Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration Program, the system combines an AI-equipped data processor with an earth observation camera created by the Tokyo University of Science. The demonstration confirmed the system's ability to detect maritime vessels using imagery captured directly in space. MHI stated that future efforts will focus on establishing a continuous improvement cycle, involving retraining AI models on the ground with operational data and remotely updating the algorithms onboard the satellite. This project underscores MHI's commitment to advancing space equipment technologies and enhancing Japan’s capabilities in space development. The successful test marks a significant step toward real-time, autonomous maritime monitoring from orbit, reducing reliance on ground-based processing for immediate data analysis.
