Mercedes-Benz Developing Long-Range PHEV for China Market
Mercedes-Benz has initiated early research and development for a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) specifically tailored to the Chinese market. According to sources familiar with the matter, the upcoming model will feature a large battery designed to deliver a significantly longer electric driving range, addressing the specific preferences of local consumers. This strategic move follows a reported 10% year-on-year decline in the automaker's China car sales during the first quarter of the year, which totaled 152,775 units. The decision highlights Mercedes-Benz's effort to remain competitive against domestic rivals who offer superior specifications at lower price points. Currently, Mercedes-Benz offers five PHEV models in China, but their electric ranges lag behind competitors. For instance, the Mercedes-Benz GLC hybrid offers an electric-only range of 115 kilometers, whereas the Chinese brand Li Auto’s L7 provides a range of 286 kilometers at a much more affordable price. By developing a long-range PHEV, Mercedes-Benz aims to bridge this technological and value gap to reverse its recent sales downturn in the world's largest automotive market.
