Chinese on-demand delivery giant Meituan has achieved a significant milestone by securing the country’s first nationwide operating certificate for low-altitude logistics. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) approved Meituan’s self-developed fourth-generation drone following a rigorous review. This advanced drone is engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions, including temperatures ranging from -20°C to 50°C, moderate rain, snow, winds up to level 6, and low-light environments. These capabilities allow operations in over 97% of Chinese urban areas. Since launching its drone program in 2017, Meituan has expanded significantly, completing over 450,000 commercial deliveries across 53 routes in major cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing by the end of 2024. According to ARK Invest’s Big Ideas 2025 report, Meituan’s commercial drone delivery volume now ties with Google’s Wing, positioning both companies as co-leaders in the global drone logistics market.
