Meituan to Acquire Dingdong Maicai's China Operations for $717 Million
Chinese delivery giant Meituan has announced plans to acquire the China operations of fresh grocery e-commerce firm Dingdong Maicai for an initial consideration of $717 million. This strategic move aims to strengthen Meituan's position in the rapidly expanding instant retail market. According to a company filing, the deal encompasses 100% equity of Dingdong’s China business but explicitly excludes its overseas operations. A key condition of the agreement requires the target group to retain a minimum of $150 million in net cash. Dingdong Maicai, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has demonstrated strong financial performance, reporting revenue of approximately 66.6 billion yuan ($9.6 billion) in the third quarter of 2025 and achieving profits for seven consecutive quarters. The company currently operates more than 1,000 front warehouses and serves around seven million monthly active users across China. This acquisition highlights the ongoing consolidation within China's competitive on-demand grocery sector, as major platforms seek to capture greater market share and enhance their logistical capabilities in the instant retail space.
