Matrix Partners Rebrands China Unit as MPC to Emphasize Independence
US-based private equity firm Matrix Partners has officially rebranded its China operations as MPC, standing for Matrix Partners China, effective July 1. While the English name changes, the Chinese name remains unchanged. This move positions Matrix Partners as the latest dollar fund to assert independence for its China arm amid rising geopolitical tensions and potential US-China technological decoupling, following similar actions by Sequoia, BlueRun, and GGV Ventures. Unlike some counterparts that executed complete splits, MPC emphasizes operational independence with separate decision-making and back offices while maintaining ties to its international roots. The firm also rebranded its Indian business to DZ47. Established in 2008, MPC manages over RMB 70 billion in assets, with key investments in Xpeng, Li Auto, and Ele.me. Managing partner Zhang Ying noted that while China's growth offered a strong foundation, the changing international landscape makes future entrepreneurship investment increasingly challenging. The rebranding aims to clarify regional market dynamics and enhance local competitiveness without severing all international connections.
