Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh Seeks to Bridge Kuki-Naga Trust Deficit Through Dialogue

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited the Ukhrul district on April 17, 2026, aiming to resolve the escalating trust deficit and intermittent clashes between the Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities. The violence in the Litan area began on February 7, 2026, following an alleged assault by a Kuki group on a Tangkhul man. During his visit, the Chief Minister emphasized that dialogue is the only viable path to restoring peace in the ethnic conflict-scarred region. He urged community elders to prioritize the future of upcoming generations over past grievances and advised local leaders to initiate constructive discussions. Singh assured affected villagers of immediate relief measures, including the provision of drinking water and the resumption of school classes. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh, and other officials, who also inspected preparations for the upcoming Shirui Lily Festival. This mission occurs against the backdrop of the broader Kuki-Meitei conflict that erupted in May 2023, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement across the state.
