Makeshift 'University City' Restores Academic Hope in Gaza

Amid the devastation of Gaza’s educational infrastructure following months of conflict, a new initiative called 'University City' has emerged in al-Mawasi, southern Gaza. Established by the US-based non-governmental organization Scholars Without Borders, this makeshift academic space provides a crucial lifeline for students displaced by war. Constructed from locally sourced materials like wood and metal sheets, the site features six halls equipped with solar-powered internet access, accommodating up to 600 students daily. The facility operates on a rotating schedule, allowing multiple institutions, including the Islamic University, Al-Azhar University, and the Palestine College of Nursing, to conduct essential in-person classes that cannot be held online. This initiative addresses the severe challenges faced by students living in tents without reliable electricity or connectivity. By prioritizing practical and discussion-based courses, University City aims to restore a sense of normalcy and academic continuity.
