Major Fire Destroys Waste Treatment Plant in Munnar, Kerala

A significant fire erupted at the waste treatment plant operated by the Munnar grama panchayat in Kallar, Idukki district, on Wednesday afternoon. The blaze, which started around 5 p.m., spread rapidly through the facility, causing extensive damage to the hill station's waste management infrastructure. Reports indicate that both segregated and non-segregated plastic waste stored at the site were consumed by the flames. During the emergency response, a wild tusker named Padayappa was spotted foraging for vegetable waste near the burning plant. The Forest Department’s Rapid Response Team (RRT) intervened to ensure the animal's safety, using firecrackers to drive the elephant away from the hazardous zone. Jayan J., head of the Munnar division RRT, confirmed that the elephant was successfully moved to a nearby Shola forest and is currently safe. The incident highlights vulnerabilities in local waste management systems and the complex interactions between urban infrastructure and wildlife in ecologically sensitive areas like Munnar. Officials are assessing the full extent of the damage and investigating the cause of the fire.
