Landmark Satellite Antennas Removed from Bukit Timah Earth Station in Singapore
Two iconic satellite antennas, which served as prominent landmarks at the southern end of the Bukit Timah Expressway for nearly four decades, have been removed from the Bukit Timah Satellite Earth Station in Singapore. The removal process commenced in the first quarter of 2026 and was completed by mid-April. According to a Singtel spokesperson, the 32-meter and 21-meter diameter antennas, originally constructed in the 1980s to support international traffic on legacy satellites, were no longer in use. Consequently, their decommissioning did not affect any current services or customers. The structures are being cleared to facilitate the development of new infrastructure designed to meet the evolving connectivity needs of enterprises and consumers. The Bukit Timah Satellite Earth Station, located on Rifle Range Road, was Singapore's second such facility, beginning operations in July 1986 and officially opening in May 1987. Its establishment significantly expanded Singapore's global reach, providing direct satellite links to 49 countries, an increase from the capabilities of the original Sentosa station opened in 1971.
