Kerala SHRC Directs Establishment of Multi-Speciality Hospital in Munnar

The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has issued a directive to the Idukki District Medical Officer and the Director of Health Services to ensure the establishment of a multi-speciality hospital in Munnar. This order follows a complaint by social worker Guinness Madaswamy regarding newborn deaths in tribal areas. The Commission, led by Chairperson Alexander Thomas, identified inadequate healthcare facilities and poor road connectivity as primary causes for the deteriorating health of pregnant women and newborns in tribal settlements. Although a government report indicated no newborn deaths in Marayur since August 2024, it highlighted significant challenges, including difficult terrain causing relatives to avoid hospital visits and resistance to vaccinations. In response, five acres of land have been allotted in Devikulam for the new facility. The Health Department is tasked with construction and staffing, while the District Collector must prioritize improving road infrastructure to connect remote tribal areas with essential healthcare services. The directive underscores the urgent need for systemic improvements to protect vulnerable populations in the region.
