8 Karnataka Pilgrims Killed in Cement Tanker Collision Near Mantralayam
Eight pilgrims from Karnataka, including six women, were killed and thirteen others injured in a severe head-on collision between a cement-laden tanker and a Bolero goods vehicle in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district. The accident occurred around 2:45 am near Chilakaladona village in Mantralayam mandal while the victims were traveling to seek blessings at the Mantralayam temple. Police reported that five occupants died instantly, while three others succumbed to their injuries at the Government Hospital in Mantralayam. Preliminary investigations indicate that rash and negligent driving by the tanker driver caused the crash, as both vehicles were traveling at considerable speeds. The deceased were residents of Chikkamagaluru district. Nine injured individuals were referred to the Government General Hospital in Kurnool for advanced treatment, while others received local care. The tanker driver, identified as Ramanna Basappa, escaped unhurt. Senior police officials, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Yemmiganur, visited the site to supervise the investigation, and a case has been registered at the Mantralayam Police Station.
