Karnataka Mandates Uniforms and ID Cards for Power Department Staff to Curb Impersonation

The Karnataka government has issued a directive requiring all field staff under the State’s Energy Department to wear prescribed uniforms and display official identity cards while on duty. This measure aims to prevent fraud and restore public trust following rising incidents of impersonation by fake electricity employees. The order applies to personnel across all power supply companies, including BESCOM, HESCOM, MESCOM, JESCOM, and CESC, covering roles such as linemen, bill collectors, and meter readers. The decision was prompted by a representation from Mohan Kumar Danappa, a member of the State Police Complaints Authority, who highlighted growing public concern. A recent incident in Hubballi, where an impostor collected money from residents, further accelerated the move. In addition to strict dress code and grooming standards, the department has launched awareness campaigns via social media, radio, and television to educate consumers on verifying official credentials. Officials hope these steps will alleviate consumer anxiety and reduce cheating cases involving fraudulent actors posing as utility workers.
