Karnataka Extends Police Chief M.A. Saleem's Tenure to August 2027

The Karnataka State government has officially extended the tenure of M.A. Saleem, the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police (DG&IGP), until August 29, 2027. This decision grants him a full two-year term as the head of the police force, aligning with the mandates of the landmark 2006 Supreme Court judgment in Prakash Singh vs Union of India, which requires a minimum two-year tenure for police chiefs to ensure administrative stability. Mr. Saleem, a 1993 batch Indian Police Service officer, initially took charge as in-charge DG&IGP on May 21, 2025, with his appointment confirmed on August 30, 2025. Without this extension, he would have retired on June 30, 2026. The notification extends his service by 14 months beyond his natural superannuation date. This move follows Karnataka's prior commitment to the Supreme Court to comply with tenure regulations, similar to extensions granted to previous police chiefs Alok Mohan, Neelmani N. Raju, and Praveen Sood. The extension aims to uphold law enforcement stability and adhere to judicial guidelines regarding police leadership tenure in the state.
