The Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP) has rolled out the Duplicate Review Checker (DRC), a pioneering artificial intelligence tool designed to detect plagiarized or template-like peer reviews in academic publishing. Announced at the 9th World Conference on Research Integrity, the system addresses growing concerns about 'review mills' where bad actors reuse reports to manipulate publication outcomes. In a pilot study analyzing 500,000 reports from 2020 to 2025, the AI identified nearly 2,500 suspicious cases with significant text overlap, including 89 exact duplicates. The DRC employs a two-stage screening process: an AI model first filters for semantic similarity, followed by a text algorithm that checks for character-level matches. This initiative responds to rising integrity issues across the industry, with publishers like PLOS reporting increased investigations into peer-review fraud.
