Intensified Border Surveillance in Erode to Curb Liquor Smuggling Ahead of Elections

Police authorities in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu have significantly intensified vehicle inspections at five strategic checkpoints along the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border. This heightened security measure comes less than a week before the state Assembly elections, aiming to prevent the illegal smuggling of liquor from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu. Officials suspect that geographical proximity may encourage illicit transport of alcohol by consumers and organized groups during the election period. To address this, a joint consultation was recently held between the Erode district police and the Chamarajanagar police of Karnataka. Both agencies agreed to strengthen cross-border surveillance and enforce strict actions against smugglers. Consequently, rigorous checks are currently being conducted at checkposts in Karapallam, Germalam, Hasanur, Bannari, and Bargur. Vehicles, especially those transporting vegetables from Karnataka, as well as tourist vehicles, are undergoing thorough inspections. Simultaneously, Karnataka police have increased vigilance on their side of the border to support these coordinated enforcement efforts. The primary objective of this joint operation is to effectively halt the illegal movement of liquor between the two states, ensuring compliance with election-related regulations and maintaining public order.
