Indian Railways Overhauls Reservation System with AI-Powered Predictions
Indian Railways is undertaking a significant modernization of its reservation infrastructure, replacing the forty-year-old system with a new technology-driven platform scheduled for implementation in August. The initiative aims to enhance passenger convenience and streamline digital services, building on the success of the RailOne app, which has garnered over 35 million downloads since its launch last July. A central feature of this transformation is the integration of an artificial intelligence-based system designed to predict the confirmation probability of waiting-list tickets. Officials report that this AI feature has significantly improved accuracy, rising from 53 percent to 94 percent, thereby providing travelers with greater certainty before their journeys. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has reviewed these plans, emphasizing the need for a seamless transition to avoid inconveniencing passengers. Currently, approximately 88 percent of ticket demand is met through digital channels, highlighting the shift away physical counters. The RailOne app also offers comprehensive services, including live train status, food ordering, and refund processing, handling nearly one million tickets daily. This overhaul represents a major step in digitizing India's vast railway network.
