India Approves Rs 890 Crore Water Project for GBS-Affected Villages in Pune
The Union Government of India has approved two major civic projects totaling Rs 1,290 crore to address urbanization challenges in Pune. A significant portion, Rs 890 crore, is allocated for a comprehensive water supply project targeting 12 villages previously affected by Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The outbreak was linked to contaminated water from the Khadakwasla dam entering the civic supply system. This new initiative aims to provide clean drinking water to approximately 7.78 lakh residents by 2052 through a 200 MLD treatment plant, extensive transmission and distribution networks, and smart metering systems. Additionally, Rs 400 crore was sanctioned for flood control measures, including storm water drainage improvements at 335 flood-prone locations across the city. Pune Municipal Corporation officials stated that these approvals, presented during the first apex committee meeting for the Urban Challenge Fund scheme, will accelerate infrastructure development and improve public health. The projects reflect heightened attention from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis towards strengthening Pune’s civic amenities and safeguarding citizens against environmental hazards.
