Hungry Lion Leverages Digital Architecture for 1,000-Store Expansion by 2029
South African quick-service restaurant chain Hungry Lion is implementing a robust digital infrastructure to support its ambitious goal of reaching 1,000 stores across Africa by 2029. Currently operating over 500 outlets in seven countries, the brand faces significant challenges related to network reliability and connectivity inconsistencies common in the region. To address these issues, Hungry Lion partnered with ICT providers Seacom and Metacom in 2024. The solution centers on Metacom’s MC7000 Enterprise Router, an SD-WAN device featuring dual primary last-mile connectivity and automatic failover to GSM networks. This architecture ensures high uptime for critical operations like mobile payments and self-service kiosks, which are vital for customer experience. The system also segments networks for store operations, staff, IoT devices, and guests via VLANs. This strategic technological upgrade aims to mitigate the estimated R1.8 billion annual losses African retailers face due to network downtime, enabling Hungry Lion to maintain operational continuity and scale effectively across diverse markets with varying infrastructure maturity.
