Huawei Unveils 1,500 kW Ultra-Fast Charger to Challenge BYD and Tesla
Chinese technology giant Huawei has announced plans to launch a megawatt charging system capable of delivering peak speeds of 1,500 kW (1.5 MW). The announcement was made by Hou Jinlong, president of Huawei’s digital power business unit, at the EV100 think tank forum in Beijing. This new infrastructure aims to fully recharge a 400 kWh battery pack in just 20 minutes, addressing critical charging speed barriers for commercial electric vehicles. Huawei stated it has already co-developed over 20 electric truck models with various automakers utilizing this ultra-fast charging technology. To mitigate strain on the power grid, many of these stations integrate energy storage units and solar photovoltaic systems. This move intensifies competition in China's EV sector, positioning Huawei against rivals like BYD, which recently introduced 1,000 kW charging, and Tesla, which plans to deploy 1.2 MW V4 Superchargers. While industry leaders race to increase charging power, some stakeholders, including battery manufacturer CATL, have expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of such high-power charging on battery reliability and lifespan. Huawei is scheduled to hold a detailed press conference on this technology on April 22.
