Huawei to Test L3/L4 Autonomous Driving on Chinese Public Roads
Huawei is set to become one of the first companies to initiate small-scale commercialization of Level 3 semi-autonomous vehicles on highways in China this year. Li Wenguang, president of Huawei’s Intelligent Driving Solution Product Line, announced this development at the China Auto Forum in Shanghai on July 11. Additionally, the tech giant plans to begin testing Level 4 highly autonomous vehicles on city streets within the same timeframe. The company aims for larger-scale adoption of its autonomous driving technology across Chinese roads by 2026. This announcement follows the April release of Huawei's fourth-generation Qiankun advanced driving system (ADS), which the company stated was ready for commercial L3 use on highways. However, actual deployment requires regulatory approval from Beijing authorities. Under Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) definitions, the L3 conditional autonomous system permits drivers to stop constantly monitoring the vehicle, provided they remain ready to take control when necessary.
