Heavy Rains Kill Child and Damage Over 1,000 Homes in Dominican Republic
Severe heavy rains in the Dominican Republic have resulted in the death of a nearly two-year-old girl and caused extensive damage to over 1,000 homes. The storm, which dumped up to 12 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, triggered widespread flooding, power outages, and water disruptions across more than a dozen provinces. Authorities were forced to evacuate over 5,000 residents, suspend classes in public and private schools, and order nonessential government employees to work remotely. President Luis Abinader remarked that no global drainage system could withstand such intensity. In addition to the fatality in Santo Domingo, crews rescued seven individuals from rising floodwaters, including a man trapped in a sewer. More than 20 communities in San José de Ocoa were isolated after a river overflowed. While the rainfall began on Monday, it is expected to subside by Wednesday night.
