GVMC Installs Green Shade Structure at RTC Complex Junction for Summer Relief

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has launched a new initiative to alleviate the impact of scorching summer heat on commuters in Visakhapatnam. As part of its Summer Action Plan, the civic body’s engineering wing installed a specialized green shade structure named ‘Haritha Ashrayam’ at the busy RTC Complex junction. This pilot project aims to provide protection to motorists, pedestrians, and those waiting at traffic signals during peak afternoon hours. The structure is engineered for durability and safety, specifically designed to withstand the city's frequent strong winds and sudden rains. To enhance comfort, water sprinklers have been installed beneath the shade to create a cooling effect. The initiative follows a similar successful model previously implemented in the Assilmetta area. Public response has been positive, with many appreciating the efforts to improve commuter comfort. GVMC Chief Engineer Satyanarayana Raju stated that the project is under close monitoring. If deemed successful, the corporation plans to replicate this model at other major junctions across the city to provide broader relief during the harsh summer season.
