Government Railway Police Seize Over 650 kg of Ganja in 15 Months

The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Tamil Nadu has seized over 650 kilograms of ganja across the Tiruchi, Madurai, and Tirunelveli sub-divisions during a 15-month period ending in March 2026. Recent operations at the Tiruchi railway junction resulted in the confiscation of approximately 25 kilograms of the contraband from abandoned luggage on inter-state express trains. Data indicates that 585.9 kilograms were seized throughout 2025, with an additional 79.7 kilograms confiscated in the first three months of 2026. The Madurai sub-division recorded the highest seizure volume. Authorities report that smugglers typically transport smaller quantities in personal belongings on long-distance trains originating from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. A common tactic involves carriers abandoning bags containing drugs in general compartments to evade detection during surprise checks. In response, the GRP has increased deployments on night trains and intensified scrutiny of inter-state services to curb the illegal transportation of narcotics through the railway network.
