Gotion High-Tech Initiates Pilot Production of All-Solid-State Batteries
Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech announced on May 17 that it has commenced pilot production of all-solid-state batteries at its facility in Hefei. The company, backed by Volkswagen as its largest shareholder with a 24.45% stake, achieved self-reliance in core equipment manufacturing for this advanced technology. The pilot line has a capacity of 0.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and produces Gemstone all-solid-state batteries featuring an energy density of 350 watt-hours per kilogram at the cell level. Pan Ruijun, the R&D director for the project, reported a high yield rate of 90% and confirmed that testing with passenger electric vehicles has begun. Gotion utilizes solid sulfides as conductive material, similar to competitors like Toyota, but has significantly improved material stability from 79% to 95% to address reactivity issues with air. This development marks a crucial step toward the large-scale commercialization of all-solid-state batteries, which are considered a long-term solution for enhancing electric vehicle performance and range.
