German Cartel Office Approves Rheinische Post Takeover of Westphalian Media

The Federal Cartel Office in Germany has officially approved the acquisition of Westfälische Medien Holding AG (WMH) by the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe. This regulatory clearance allows the Rheinische Post to become the largest daily newspaper publishing group in North Rhine-Westphalia by circulation. The competition authority deemed the merger harmless, citing that the distribution areas of the involved publishers do not overlap, meaning they are not in direct competition for readers or advertising markets. Andreas Mundt, President of the Federal Cartel Office, confirmed that the companies operate in distinct geographic zones. The transaction involves the Rheinische Post taking over all shares of WMH, which owns several prominent regional titles including Westfälische Nachrichten, Westfalen-Blatt, Münstersche Zeitung, Westfälisches Volksblatt, and Allgemeine Zeitung Coesfeld. Although the plans were initially announced in early March, specific financial details of the deal remain undisclosed. This consolidation significantly reshapes the media landscape in the region, creating a dominant player in the local newspaper industry while satisfying antitrust requirements due to the lack of market overlap.
