First Phase of Bucharest’s Unirii Square Reconstruction Completed Ahead of Schedule
Local authorities in Bucharest have announced the completion of the first phase of the major reconstruction project for the underground slab structure at Unirii Square. Finished less than a year after construction began, this milestone places the overall project more than four months ahead of its original schedule, with over 60% of the new slab now complete. The renovated section near Hanul lui Manuc features a reinforced concrete slab twice as thick as the previous structure, designed to last at least a century. Following successful static and dynamic load tests conducted by the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, traffic from Halelor Street toward Splaiul Independenței is set to reopen soon. District 4 Mayor Daniel Băluță highlighted that work is proceeding simultaneously on three of the four phases. General Mayor Ciprian Ciucu added that the reconstruction will coordinate with future tram line connections. The contractor, Erbașu SA, is considering accelerating the final phase to minimize public disruption. The entire project, which began in June 2025, is scheduled for full completion by summer 2027.
