Federal Police Investigate 262 Suspected Frauds in RS Flood Victim Housing Program
The Brazilian Federal Police are investigating at least 262 suspected cases of fraud within the assisted housing purchase program designed for victims of the May 2024 floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The Municipal Housing Department (Demhab) in Porto Alegre reported that 77 of these cases have been administratively validated with material evidence of irregularities. These validated cases represent approximately 1.7% of the 4,421 contracts signed in the capital, while the total suspicions account for nearly 6%. Alleged irregularities include the misappropriation of resources and beneficiaries failing to vacate their previous properties as required. The potential financial impact of the 262 suspected cases could reach R$52.4 million, with the validated cases alone amounting to up to R$15.4 million. The program, part of the Minha Casa Minha Vida Reconstruction initiative, provides up to R$200,000 for new property acquisitions to low-income families whose homes were destroyed. Demhab noted that the number of investigations may rise as new complaints are processed through a channel established in June 2025. The funds are sourced from the Residential Leasing Fund linked to Caixa Econômica Federal.
