Failed Bid to Appoint Thirumavalavan as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
A last-minute political maneuver to appoint Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has failed, according to senior party sources. The proposal emerged after initial attempts to form an AIADMK government with DMK support encountered significant hurdles. Although the idea gained traction among some factions, it ultimately collapsed due to internal resistance within the AIADMK and concerns over public perception. VCK leaders feared criticism for hijacking the mandate of the TVK party, which won 108 constituencies, while the VCK secured only two seats. Additionally, Left parties refused to back an AIADMK-led administration due to the BJP's alleged involvement. Consequently, the VCK and Left fronts withdrew their support for the AIADMK-DMK arrangement and instead backed the TVK to prevent Governor’s rule. Thirumavalavan delayed his decision until May 9, 2026, before formally submitting a letter of support to TVK leader Adhav Arjuna. This decision paved the way for C. Joseph Vijay to be sworn in as Chief Minister, ending the speculation about a historic appointment of the first Scheduled Caste Chief Minister in the state.
